Happy Birthday to a very special Lady:

 

She is the Daughter of a Civil War Soldier.

 

She is the last direct descendant of a black Civil War Medal of Honor recipient.

 

She is believed to the last direct descendant of a slave in this country.

 

She was responsible for saving and preserving the material that was used to secure the Medal of Honor for:

 

Color Sergeant Andrew Jackson Smith, 55th Massachusetts Colored Volunteers.

Caruth Smith Washington was born on November 25, 1907

in Grand Rivers, Kentucky. She is believed to be the last direct descendant of a slave in this country. Caruth is the daughter of a Civil War soldier and is the last direct descendant of a Black Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. She saved and preserved the war records of her father which were used to secure the Medal of Honor for Color Sergeant Andrew Jackson Smith, 55th Massachusetts Colored Volunteers.
