Dedicated to the memory of almost 18,000 Black soldiers from Mississippi that served in the Union Army; countless thousands of men and women (Contrabands) who escaped slavery or were liberated that worked for the Union Army as scouts, spies, nurses, teamsters, cooks, servants, blacksmiths, etc.; and thousands of men, women and children who were not able to escape the bondage of slavery and were not freed until the end of the war or after ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment.
