The U.S. Department of Veterans Affair and the Consul General de France Government cordially invite you and the members of Montford Point to attend a ceremony bestowing the National Order of the Legion of Honor, France's highest national award, to World War I Veteran Master Sergeant Joseph W. Simmons, U.S. Army, Retired, of Port Royal, SC.
The prestigious Legion of Honor is equal to our U.S.A Congressional Medal of Honor, and it is being award by the French government to surviving service members who fought on French soil during World War I.
The ceremony will be held at the Heritage Club, Naval Hospital Beaufort, on Tuesday, August 31, 1999 at 11: 00 o'clock.
The Marine Corps Band, MCRD Parris Island and the Color Guard, MCAS Beaufort, will perform as part of the ceremony.
There will be a reception following the ceremony. We will take this opportunity to honor Master Sergeant in recognizing his upcoming 100th birthday, October 13, 1999.
