UPDATED: Saturday, March 31, 2007 - 2:02 pm (EDT)

More than forty delegates of historical organizations and other
supporters affiliated with the United States Colored Troops met in
Raleigh North Carolina on Friday, March 23, 2007. The representatives of the United States Colored Troops Living History Association met to chart a course for the next year, elect officers and conduct other organization business. The business meeting was held in conjunction with a weekend USCT Symposium.

Delegates representing USCT military units, living historians,
storytellers, research/writers, historians, educators and business
people made decisions that will position the organization to
eventually have a central role in having American Civil War history
become inclusive.

Any accurate presentation of the history of the American Civil War
must include the full story of the United States Colored Troops. The current planning for the sesquicentennial observance of the American Civil War, in individual states as well as nationally, must include the accurate story of the quest for freedom by Black Americans.

USCTLHA delegates agreed:
  1. To organize the business of the national association by
state, as the organization begins to grow.
  2. To require membership categories and fees of $25.
    (Individual); $100. (Unit /Organization); $10. (Associate/Student).
  3. To elect five Association officers to new two-year terms and
six at-large officers to staggered terms.
  4. To govern the Association through an eleven member board.
  5. To establish a permanent website and transfer information
    from the temporary site.
  6. To refer consolidation of the draft by-laws to an appointed
    by-laws committee.
  7. To incorporate as a non-profit and apply for tax-exempt
    status with the IRS.
  8. To make the maximum effort possible to participate in a Camp
Nelson, Kentucky living history & training event in September of 2007 and support Fort Pocahontas in May of 2007.
  9. To post the USCTLHA affiliates events on a master schedule
    and establish benefits of membership.
  10. To schedule the next annual meeting for the early Spring of
    2008.

USCTLHA Membership Drive

On March 23, 2007 the second official meeting of the USCTLHA was convened in Raleigh, North Carolina at the Clarion Hotel.

One of the initiatives was to secure a non profit status for the organization.  It is in that area that I, as Treasurer, seek your assistance and cooperation.

We have received an EIN number from the Internal Revenue Service and now must proceed with the tedious process of applying for tax exempt status for the organization.  Once the application is completed we will need a $300 application fee.  We are assessing membership fees paid in previous years and will add that to the treasury once received.

I have set a goal of 100 members for the United States Colored Troops Living History Association and cannot reach that goal without your help. I would ask that you share this email with friends and colleagues that might be interested.

Attached is the USCTLHA Membership Application for your convenience.  Please complete the form and return as indicated.
